Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a birth defect in which a part of the aorta is narrowed, thus blood flow to the body is decreased. This condition can be life-threatening in infants and must be immediately diagnosed and treated. The treatment for CoA varies with the degree of the disease and the baby\'s health. Coarctation of aorta treatment in a newborn the first treatment usually involves stabilizing the infant with drugs like prostaglandin E1, which keeps the ductus arteriosus patent so that blood can bypass the constricted area. This can be a temporary relief of symptoms. Surgery is typically required in the majority of infants with CoA. The most common procedure is resection of the constricted segment of the aorta and end-to-end anastomosis (reconnection of the normal segments of the aorta). In certain situations, a balloon angioplasty can be done to widen the narrowing.
